Recording
World music culture is blessed with a rich catalogue of recorded music, and it remains a wonderful and popular art form. The process of getting the perfect take, finding the right combination of sounds & styles, it’s beautiful. Afterwards, a Vinyl pressing, CD, or MP3- something tangible that you can play over and over, in certain moments, share with friends, publish on the internet or attempt to take the traditional route of distribution via specialised record labels.
For vocalists, recording demo’s is a key part of the development process with Ian. We record and listen back in the studio together, discuss and hear what we can improve on. It’s always interesting hearing ourselves objectively for the first time. It’s also a great way of tracking progress, by comparing early recordings with later ones. Finished demos can be uploaded to somewhere like Soundcloud and shared with peers for some quality feedback. (And if we happen to get a really hot recording, might even make it onto this website!)

“One day, I just decided I’m ready to go. So I went down with my guitar and sat on the front steps of Sam Phillips recording studio” Johnny Cash

“There’s something magic in recording studios. There’s a reason good music continues to be made in them. It’s just some mojo element.” Rick Rubin

How it works
We’ll have a think about the style of the recording- whether we want it to sound rough and ready like a demo- or something posher. The studio has two rooms- you’ll probably be in the live room, recording with headphones- Ian in the control room, speaking in your ear (not whilst you’re singing!). We get a few takes- Ian will give you a few tips, as we search for a bit of vocal magic. When it comes, we usually know.
You come back into the control room- hear it out through the monitors- then Ian will take away for final mixing and mastering. Soon you’ll have an MP3 to play- as well as a high-res master copy for any future use you may have for the recording.
Don’t worry if you can’t play an instrument- Ian will play and make a track for you or we’ll simply use a downloaded backing track.

“I consider the recording studio where I was born” Jimmy Levine

“I’m just having fun. I go in the studio, and I have no idea what I’m going to do, what I’m going to make. I’m going to make whatever I feel like making.” Martin Garrix

Ian changed the game for me. Turned each breath into a gale. Continues to open my eyes on recording and performance. Good medicine. Better than therapy.
